Sustainable healthcare for Birmingham and Solihull
As one of the largest teaching hospital trusts in England, providing services for a huge population from four acute hospital sites and community locations, our impact on the environment is immense. However, we are committing to tackling the resulting climate change by reducing our impact as part of the national aim to be the world’s first "net zero" national health service.
We’re all aware of our individual responsibilities to make more sustainable, healthy choices for ourselves and our environment. We understand that this topic may be uninspiring for some, yet it doesn’t have to be boring – this is about the future for generations to come. It's important to look at how we can work creatively and innovatively now, to transform the shape of those future challenges.
The NHS remains responsible for at least 5% of emissions in this country – carbon and greenhouse gases which contribute to climate change – and this needs to change.
While UHB has an excellent track record in how we approach environmental challenges, we will all need to do more to reach the "net zero" goal. Our sustainability strategy champions our actions and aims, with ways to share excellent ideas that will deliver greener, cleaner communities for the people of Birmingham and Solihull.
