Diabetes and Endocrinology centre

The Diabetes Centre at Heartlands Hospital operates as the main hub for all diabetes and endocrinology services at the Trust. The outpatient services are developed based on the local needs of the population as well as in keeping with the academic status of the unit.

Following the integration of Solihull and Heartlands Hospitals to the Trust, there has been improved co-ordination of diabetes services that has enabled effective cross working between the sites. While some of the essential services are made available at both sites, patients from all the three sites have unrestricted access to specialised diabetes services some of which are located at the Heartlands site.

The Diabetes Centre at Heartlands functions as a one stop clinic with access to multi-disciplinary care all under one roof. There are 10,000 patients registered with the diabetes clinics across the Trust, accounting for nearly 26,000 visits annually.

Referral criteria

You can find the referral criteria on the Birmingham and Solihull ICB website.

Waiting times

There has been unprecedented growth both nationally and locally in demand for weight management services driven primarily by:

  • increased awareness of weight-gain and changing attitudes to weight and health across the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond.
  • increased awareness and acceptance of bariatric surgery as an effective treatment option for obesity.
  • the launch of weight medication including Saxenda and Wegovy (and associated media coverage) as a treatment option for Tier 3 teams.

Given the current rise in referrals, waiting times for some patients are longer than expected.

We understand this can be frustrating and apologise for the wait.
