Immunology

University Hospitals Birmingham NHS foundation Trust's (UHB) Immunology service was established in 1970 at Heartlands Hospital and was the first such service in the NHS. We offer diagnosis and management for children and adults who suffer from disorders of the immune system.

We also provide a service for people with hereditary angioedema. This is a rare inherited disorder of the immune system that causes unpredictable and occasionally serious skin or abdominal swellings.

The department has been accredited since 2012 for provision of immunodeficiency services. This accreditation was renewed in 2018 after an assessment by the QPIDS team from the Royal College of Physicians accreditation unit.

Many people with immunodeficiency disorders need life-long treatment. Our team supports a wide range of treatment options to ensure that your condition can be managed with the least inconvenience to your daily life.

HIV infection and AIDS are managed under a separate HIV Medicine service, not Immunology.

Our emergency departments (A&Es) are very busy at the moment
