Maxillofacial Surgery

Oral and maxillofacial surgery is the surgical specialty concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases affecting the mouth, jaws, face and neck.

Consultant specialists working in this area are variously termed oral surgeons, maxillofacial surgeons or oral and maxillofacial surgeons.

The specialty of oral and maxillofacial surgery is unique in requiring a dual qualification in medicine and dentistry. Oral and maxillofacial surgeons work in multi-disciplinary teams alongside other specialists including:

  • orthodontists
  • oncologists
  • ear, nose and throat surgeons
  • neurosurgeons
  • plastic surgeons

The University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Unit works primarily at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, but also have clinics in allied hospitals:

  • Birmingham Children's Hospital
  • City Hospital
  • Solihull Hospital
  • Sandwell Hospital
  • Birmingham Dental Hospital

Advice and refer

University Hospitals Birmingham is using "advice and refer" as the only process for referrals from GPs for this service, using the "advice and guidance" functionality on the NHS e-Referral Service (e-RS). This will not change for cancer and two week wait (2WW) referrals.
