This course is for all Trust staff who are responsible for performing Arterial Blood Gas sampling as part of their role.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module learners should be able to:

  • Comprehend the key principles behind taking a peripheral Arterial Blood Gas.
  • Identify the appropriate pre-procedure checks.
  • To gain knowledge on how to perform an Allen test.
  • Have an understanding of the relevant anatomy involved with artery selection.
  • Discuss the procedural risks and complications.
  • Identify and select the appropriate equipment.
  • Be able to follow the steps involved with the procedural skill.
  • Describe the correct procedures for documenting, transporting, and processing samples.
