The NHS will provide hospital based investigations and some fertility treatments free of charge to anyone who fulfils the eligibility criteria set out below.
Some treatments are NHS funded (IVF) but patients must fulfil the criteria.
- Patients must fulfil the definition of infertile as defined by NICE clinical guidance No. 156.
- The age requirement for a female wishing to have treatment must be under 40 years of age
- Female body mass index (BMI) must be between 19- 30 for reasons outlined in RCOG information sheet
- Both male and female must not have had previous sterilisation – this applies to male and female partners
- Patients must be non-smokers
- No recreational drug or alcohol abuse
- You clinically fall outside NICE recommendation for further treatment - Previous six cycles of ovulation induction or IVF treatment
Moreover, the Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCG) will provide treatment depending on those who fulfil the eligibility criteria. NHS England determines the funds that local CCGs have access to.
If you are an overseas patient, you may be chargeable for all treatment and NHS initial investigations. Information on that can be found online.
