Quality policy

RRPPS operates a Quality Management System which complies with the requirements of ISO 9001:2015. We were first registered to the ISO Quality Management Standard in June 2000. We are committed to continually improving our effectiveness driven by the requirement to ensure customer satisfaction.

RRPPS team members establish annual quality objectives, which aim to improve existing services provided by RRPPS, or to offer new services to respond to changing customer needs. These objectives are reviewed at each team meeting, and monitored by senior management and quality assurance personnel.

RRPPS’ Quality Policy is reviewed annually and communicated to all staff members within the organisation. We ensure that all personnel understand and fully implement our policy and procedures, and are committed to the ethos of continually improving our services to our customers.

The work of the department:

RRPPS is the largest and most experienced organisation in the Midlands providing a comprehensive radiation physics and protection service throughout the United Kingdom, with some of our services offered internationally. It is based within University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB) and employs approximately 45 staff, working from purpose built laboratories, comprising administrative staff, clinical technologists and clinical scientists. RRPPS services are used to protect users of ionising and non-ionising radiation, providing guidance, interpretation and training for implementation of regulations and national and international guidance.

Staff include certificated radiation protection advisers, radioactive waste advisers, medical physics experts and laser protection advisers. RRPPS’ staff also includes radiation instrument specialists (qualified persons) and magnetic resonance safety experts.  Services are provided to facilities using x-ray machines, ultrasound imaging equipment, lasers, phototherapy treatments, MRI scanners, and radiation sources. These facilities include radiotherapy departments, nuclear medicine departments, imaging departments, dermatology departments, laboratories, universities, colleges and industrial users of radioactive materials.

RRPPS includes an Approved Dosimetry Service that has been recognised by the Health and Safety Executive ever since the introduction of the Ionising Radiations Regulations in 1985. Our experience in personal monitoring dates back to 1949 and we are the largest approved dosimetry service in the NHS.

RRPPS provides an independent, high quality calibration service for a wide range of diagnostic X-ray and radiation protection instrumentation.
