The Sport and Exercise Medicine Service (SEMS) offers a multi-disciplinary approach to Sport and Exercise Medicine.
During a single hospital visit, a patient may benefit from seeing a number of health professionals who specialise in different areas. Therefore, dietitian, podiatrist and physiotherapy clinics run simultaneously.
Patients
The service sees patients with the following problems:
- Acute musculoskeletal injuries:
- Non-surgical fractures (e.g. stress fractures)
- Soft tissue injuries
- Dance related injuries and illness
- Acute or chronic musculoskeletal symptoms (non-inflammatory)
- Symptoms which prevent or restrict an individual from participating in their chosen physical activity:
- Gastrointestinal symptoms relating to exercise
- Exercise associated respiratory symptoms
- Overtraining syndrome and relative energy deficiency in sport (RED-S)
- Returning to exercise following injury or illness advice
- Sports-related concussion return to play advice
Clinical pathways
The team has established clinical pathways with support from:
- consultant endocrinologists with an interest in metabolic bone to manage stress fractures
- a consultant neurosurgeon with expertise in sports concussion to manage sports related concussion injuries
Partnerships
The SEMS works in partnership with the National Institute of Dance Medicine and Science (NIDMS) and One Dance UK.
Diagnostics
The service works closely with a team of five fellowship-trained specialist musculoskeletal radiologists to provide a comprehensive skill mix of diagnostic imaging and interventions.
Diagnostic imaging includes all modalities:
- X-ray
- Ultrasound
- MRI
- CT (CT SPECT)
- PET
- DEXA
- MRA
Interventions include ultrasound or fluoroscopy guided injections and radio frequency ablation for mortons neuroma.
