Pre-op care
Arthroplasty patients will receive information regarding their operation and after care in an educational session called joint school. This will prepare patients for the expectations of surgery.
If a need is highlighted during the nursing pre-op assessment, then patients will be reviewed either by phone or in person with a member of the skilled orthopaedic team. The team will be able to advise on any questions that the patient may have.
Preparing patients is essential for the flow through the elective surgery hub.
Inpatient care
The inpatient therapy team are a highly skilled multidisciplinary team consisting of physiotherapists, occupational therapists and therapy support workers.
The team reviews the patient within hours of the surgery to provide exercises important to promote strength, movement and recovery, mobilise with an appropriate walking aid, assess essential activities of daily living, and complete stairs as appropriate.
The aim is to discharge the patient within 23 hours.
Post-op care
Patients who have undergone arthroplasty surgery are reviewed six weeks post-operatively by an advanced clinical practitioner physiotherapist within orthopaedic clinic.
We work with the multi-disciplinary team to monitor post op complications including wound concerns, prosthetic joint infections, DVT and PE, knee joint stiffness and dislocation. We are able to offer expert patient education and rehabilitation and work closely with the consultants to optimise patient care.
