Vascular Surgery

The vascular service offers one-stop diagnosis and treatment for venous and arterial diseases. This department employs a combination of radiology and vascular specialists, working alongside each other to create a new and improved service.

The directorate has a strong academic background that has led on several national clinical studies.

Patients referred by their GP will be treated by one of a team of seven trained vascular experts with access to the latest assessment, treatment and aftercare to help cure leg ulcers, prevent major strokes, treat varicose veins, prepare patients for successful kidney dialysis and manage all the problems associated with aneurysm and peripheral vascular disease.

Heartlands Hospital and Good Hope Hospital have radiology interventional theatres featuring highly specialised digital imaging. The area is managed by a team of skilled radiologists, radiographers, nurses and radiographic assistants.

In addition to the new equipment in the interventional theatre, radiology advances in mobile imaging technology have enabled ever more complex interventions to be performed by teams of endovascular surgeons and radiologists in the main operating theatre. A new Hybrid operating theatre has just been commissioned at Heartlands Hospital, to open in 2013.

New advances in CT and MRI imaging are provided by the Trust which has allowed the vascular team to plan for the endovascular treatment of aneurysms, carotid artery and peripheral vascular disease as well as being a major aid to the rapid diagnosis of acute vascular problems.

Emergency service

The emergency service has a team of specialist vascular surgeons available 24 hours a day to deal with referrals and enquiries. The inpatient emergency service is centred at Heartlands where all diagnosis and treatment takes place.

Elective Service

Inpatient elective surgery happens at Heartlands Hospital. Outpatient assessment is done through one-stop clinics which are available across all three Hospitals in the Trust. The venous service is an ambulatory minimally invasive treatment based service.

Clinical Nurse Specialists

There are three clinical nurse specialists who provide services for intermittent claudication, aneurysm surveillance and leg ulcer management.

Vascular Laboratory

This permits one stop Duplex assessment of patients with arterial and venous problems. Two labs are based at Good Hope Hospital and Heartlands Hospital, with supporting services for clinics at Solihull Hospital. The labs are staffed by three fully trained technicians.

Waiting times

The single visit assessment often allows the planning of treatment on the same visit with a choice of dates available for most services.
