Our hospitals
There are four main specialist sites you will normally attend for glaucoma care at University Hospitals Birmingham (UHB):
- Good Hope Hospital
- Heartlands Hospital
- Solihull Hospital
- Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham
The glaucoma specialists at UHB also work closely with specialists at the Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre, the regional specialist emergency and surgical centre. This centre is part of Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust.
You may also attend appointments for your eye care with your GP and optometrist or optician. If this is the case, you should inform your care team at University Hospitals Birmingham when you come to your next appointment.
Who you might meet
If you're receiving treatment for glaucoma at University Hospitals Birmingham (UHB), you're under the care of a supportive team who help to manage your treatment. You may meet many of our glaucoma specialists during your treatment.
Glaucoma consultant ophthalmologist
Your glaucoma consultant ophthalmologist is a senior eye surgeon that leads the team of people caring for you. They specialise in caring for people who have glaucoma and also lead the teams who perform glaucoma laser surgery and other surgical operations.
Glaucoma fellows and specialist registrars
Our fellows and registrars form a team of experienced doctors who work closely with your consultant and specialise in caring for people who have glaucoma and other eye problems.
Specialist nurses and advanced clinical practitioners
These nurses that specialise in the treatment of glaucoma and other eye conditions, and work closely with the doctors and the rest of the care team.
Orthoptists and technicians
You are likely to have a number of diagnostic tests during one of your appointments. This is to help your care team monitor your condition and determine the right treatment plan for you. The orthoptists and technicians help to conduct these diagnostic tests.
Administrative and support staff
We have a wonderful team of administrative and support staff help to support you and your care team with managing your condition and appointments. For example, you or your family may speak to your ophthalmologist’s secretary over the phone, or you may meet some of the support staff at one of your appointments.
