About Our Knee Unit

The Knee Unit at University Hospitals Birmingham is a top-rated clinic, known for its all-in-one, patient-centered care. Our team includes highly experienced consultant doctors who specialize in knee conditions, along with physiotherapists and advanced practitioners, all working together to give you the best care possible.

We strive to make your experience as simple and efficient as possible. Whenever we can, we offer a "one-stop" service, so you can see specialists, get advanced imaging, and other services all in one visit. This means fewer appointments and a quicker, smoother care experience.

Our team also meets every two weeks to review more complex cases, involving knee experts and radiologists. This teamwork helps ensure we create the most effective and personalized treatment plan for each patient, especially for those with rare or challenging conditions.

Specialist knee treatments

Our knee unit offers a wide range of treatments for all types of adult knee conditions, including:

  • knee replacements: total and partial knee replacements to help relieve pain and improve movement.
  • acl (anterior cruciate ligament) injuries: treatment for torn or damaged ACLs.
  • meniscal injuries: repairing torn cartilage in the knee.
  • knee trauma: care for fractures, ligament injuries, and complex knee instability.
  • sports injuries: specialised care for knee injuries and instability caused by sports.
  • patella (kneecap) issues: treating dislocations or instability of the kneecap, including fixing failed previous surgeries.
  • cartilage injuries: repair and replacement options for damaged cartilage.
  • knee realignment (osteotomy): surgical procedures to realign the knee and reduce pain.
  • complex cases: we offer care for failed ligament reconstructions and painful or failing knee replacements.
  • joint preservation surgery: procedures to protect the knee joint and delay the need for replacement.

Convenient locations for care

We aim to make it easy for you to access care close to home. Our dedicated knee clinics are held at Good Hope Hospital and Solihull Hospital, with additional services at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital. You’ll be welcomed by our friendly and experienced staff, who ensure that every patient feels comfortable and well cared for.

Excellence in training and innovation

Our knee unit is also a recognized center of excellence for training future knee specialists. We support and train both regional trainees and senior fellows, who learn from our experienced consultants. These fellows take an active role in patient care, research, and new treatment methods, helping us continue advancing knee care.

We maintain strong connections with other medical specialties, fellows, and previous clinicians, fostering a culture of learning and collaboration. Our unit is known nationally and internationally for both its clinical care and academic research.
