Appointments and referral information

Patients are referred to our service and seen in our clinics through an appointment service. Referrals to our lipid service can be made via primary care (GP Services) or a hospital doctor (in patients of our acute hospital provider).

The service takes consultant to consultant / advanced nurse practitioner referrals primary to secondary care, and offers 'Advice and Guidance' to GPs in our local area.

For general enquires we take calls through our patient support line. Calls are triaged prioritising safety and urgency, and we endeavour to return calls within 2 working days.

Appointments are sent by post to our service users. Please check with the reception staff in the Outpatients Department that we have the most up to date information for us to contact you. We will usually send you a text reminder prior to your appointment. If you are unable to attend your appointment please call us at the earliest opportunity to rearrange. Should you need further information please call our administrative support staff and / or use the service helpline leaving us a message.

Information for appointments and letters can be found using the following link:

Our appointments are face to face at the Birmingham Heartlands Treatment Centre, and by telephone. With telephone consultations we will identify ourselves to you and would appreciate you identifying yourself to us, and any other participants in the room.

Infection control and our service

The service operates within the wider framework of the Trust Infection Control measures. This means that we may change the structure of our appointments in the interest of overall health and safety. We will endeavour to keep you informed of changes in our service.

Advice and refer

University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust is implementing advice and refer as the only referral process for the service, using the advice and guidance functionality on the NHS e-Referral Service (e-RS). This will not change for cancer and two week wait (2WW) referrals.

For further information for patients, please see our advice and refer page.
