Urogynaecology

Urogynaecology is a sub speciality of gynaecology, treating patients with urinary incontinence, vaginal prolapse, recurrent urinary tract infections, bladder pain and pelvic floor injury after childbirth including faecal incontinence, along with many other conditions.

Here at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB), our dedicated team and departments care for women by providing expert services such as assessment, investigations and treatment for women. Our team consists of consultants, clinical nurse specialists and physiotherapists based at Good Hope and Solihull hospitals.

Investigations undertaken by our team may include:

  • keeping a 'bladder diary' to track urinary habits
  • conducting a flow rate study to record the rate and volume of urine passed
  • using a cystoscope to examine the bladder and determine if any underlying conditions are causing urinary symptoms
  • performing a urodynamics test to study the bladder, urethra, and muscles around the neck of the bladder, which helps identify any underlying conditions causing urinary incontinence or difficulty in passing urine
